  • Grapevine support

Yesterday I was doing some cleanup around my garden and nearly freaked out when I noticed that half the arch my grapevine was growing up was missing thanks to the weather. The grape itself is fine but currently it's being propped up by a temporary makeshift support made of bamboo canes and string.

The lower parts of the vine are still firmly attached to what's left of the arch, but the arch is still falling apart thanks to the weather. The vine is still dormant, so is it safe to snip off the tendrils attaching the vine to the broken arch so I can replace it with a new one? I have no experience with grapevines and don't want to damage it in any way.

It is safe to trim them when dormant, round now is the right time to chop bits off,
You really need something metal to support the weight as it grows or something wood with maybe 4 inch by 3 inch wood for the main poles and held together with woodscrews not nails most trellis will never hold even a small vine for long

Thank you! The old arch was metal, but it was a thin spindly thing and all the rungs began to fall off everytime the wind blew. -_- I think the weight of the vine started to warp the thin iron rungs and then the rain got in and made everything a million times worse. This time I'm going to go for a nice robust wooden arbour to hold the weight better. Thanks again!
