  • Let's play the plant identification game! :D

If anyone could help me out and have a guess at what these guys might be, I'd very much appreciate it!

Firstly, I was waging a vicious war against brambles today (my poor injured hands: the walking wounded), and was about to chop yet another evil thorny thing down when I realised it was something different. It has thick, daark brown stems/branches, with lighter, almost white thorns. I forgot to get a close-up picture of the actual stems, but they were topped with these weird fruits/berries:

Which are just sort of plonked on the ends of the branches like this:

I also got a picture of the leaves too:

Any ideas? I don't know if I should cut the creeping stems away or no.

Well I don't know much about flowers but it looks like a Rose Hip to me & the plant looks like a Rose.

Hidden behind a load of brambles was this dude:

Any idea? I quite like the fan-look of it but haven't a foggiest what it is.

Definitely a raspberry/tayberry/loganberry type of thing.

Agree, looks like a raspberry. It also looks like you're in my garden, complete with ramshackle fence being throttled by ivy.

-Bounds around happily- You are my favorite people, you know that, right?

Any advice on how I should be caring for it? As in, should I cut the canes down to the ground now to encourage fruiting canes to grow, use the fence to support them and tie them in, etc?

Since you don't know exactly what it is, cut out any dead stems to ground level and leave the others. If you're not sure whether they're dead or alive, scrape your fingernail on the bark. If its green beneath, its alive
