  • Walnut trees - Have I been conned?

Hi I have bought online two named walnut trees - Franquette and Broadview, and a cherry -Penny. These have just arrived and they are fairly small at about 3'6" feet tall for the walnuts ( although the tops have been nipped out so they probably would have been c. 4.5' tall) - less for the cherry c.3'

However I can see no sign of a graft on any of the trees. Previous cherries I've had have been clearly grafted so I' very suspicious there but what about walnuts?
Have I just been sent rootstocks or could these be genuine?

By the way these weren't cheap - £35 each and £18 for the cherry.
I'd appreciate any advice . Thanks

Don't know much about trees...but did you buy them from a reputable place?

Only had the website to go on really so can't say. Hadn't heard of them before I found them but then that's true for nearly all independent places - if they're not a big chain you haven't heard of them

Have you asked them whether they were grafted?

I thought they had to be grafted as they don't root from cuttings and nut grown trees can't be true to variety

There is similar question here http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...ion_83470.html with photos, that may help you spot a graft..

If you say where they were from maybe other people have had things from them?

                Why don't you ask them?

My Dad had a Walnut Tree grown from a Walnut the squirrel planted. Grew like hell and fruited very well. Still does. That was true from seed!

I think John's Market garden is connected to Chris Bowers.
In the past I've had fruit trees from them and all were definitely grafted and satisfactory quality, but for reasons which I can't discuss on an open forum without being sued, I would not buy from them again nor recommend them.
If I said that from what I've seen, trees appear to be labelled at time of order despatch rather than at time of grafting it might give a clue.

May not be grafted, have a read of this site:
Benefits of Grafted Walnut Trees over Seedling Trees

They talk of grafted and seedling trees, so a seedling walnut seems not necessarily uncommon.
You may have one I suppose.

Some nurseries don't operate a stock control as such - they just take orders and if they don't have exactly what you asked for they send out the closest match they have in stock but may not tell you.

So if the nursery is one which practises such dubious behaviour, maybe they went to pack two grafted walnuts but didn't have any, but found a couple of seedling walnuts nearby which seemed close enough that most people would not notice. After all: it'd still produce walnuts.
                        .

Was not questioning the stock control or what the nursery may have done, dubious or otherwise, or anything else. The site refers to both grafted and seedling walnuts.

The opening line of the page refered to is:
"Grafted trees are generally more robust, hardier and reliable growers than seedling trees."

As I said in the post Badily may have a seedling and not a grafted.

We're all speculating about what might have happened but, if Badilly has any doubts about the trees being as sold, they should take it up with the supplier.
