  • Cheap seeds...

Does anyone know where I can buy cheap but decent quality seeds for vegetables and salad? I have collected seeds for years and have just found out that vermin got into my seed box when the mains water leak flooded my allotment a few weeks ago and all my seeds are ruined. Included self saved seeds from heritage varieties

I'm loathe to use F1 seeds but I'm going to have to. I'm currently unemployed so I can't afford to restock with the brands I used to when I was working. I'm absolutely gutted.

Only packets I managed to save are flowers, which I don't have the space/conditions to grow down in London.

Any ideas of where to restock, particularly online where there might be discounts/vouchers are most welcome. A garden center I used to use in Norfolk was pretty fairly priced but theres not many garden centers round here and those that do exist are way overpriced.

Lidl, 99 shop and poundland all have some of the mainstream varieties for very cheap. We're talking 3-4 packets for a pound. You won't find many of the more expensive F1 varieties for these prices... but nothing particularly exciting on the heritage variety either.

I probably grow 50% of my veg from these varieties.

Why are you gong to have to use F1 seeds?

VM is right - L1dl; or W1lko, £shop or equivalant; Ald1 - all do really cheap seeds. At our £shop, there is a bean/peas selection pack of 8 packs for £1 (obvs.)

Online, there are also outlets doing cheap seed packs in the 29-49p price range - do a search on here and they should come up (in grapes recommendations).

Will check for those shops - I can't think of any round here though. I live in a pretty dead area for any sort of outdoor fun, the shops don't cater to gardeners as it's just concrete. Never seen a poundland or lidl, but i think there's a wilko a few miles up the road so will have a look next time I venture up there. I don't tend to go out much to shops, I literally do all of my food shopping in 2 shops down the road! so I'll look online first as I'm not much of a shopper...I'm trying to remember what my faves were but it's all gone from my memory. I'm vegan but I want to go and shoot vermin now. The plot cats need to up their game!!

The seeds I've lost were all organic, some from the heritage seed library, self saved and were varieties I had come to know and love. So I'm not expecting to ever have a collection like that again, considering it took me 5 years to build, and I had a lot of money and time to do it. Now I have the time but no money. boooooo. Don't ask me to name them as my memory is atrocious and i can't remember what was what, only that they all tasted really good and grew well.

My chilli, tomato and squash collection will hurt the most, as I grew around 5-10 varieties of each every year, with each seed packet being quite costly as I wanted organic/non GMO plus liked to try different varieties to find my faves. Am gutted, and was just getting back to a place where I had caught up on the last round of damage on the plot.

Thanks all for the tips, will check out online retailers first, lest I have to trundle around high streets (probably my worst nightmare)

If you go to somewhere like Homebase you can buy a multipack of seeds with things like Carrot seed, Onion seed and that all in one pack and best thing is Homebase seed is Mr Fothergills I believe. That way it works out cheaper plus its from a good supplier

Oooooh thank you Lisasbolt! Amazing offer - will PM you my address. Let me know if you want me to paypal the postage costs

B&M aren't around this far south sadly. Went in there once in Norwich, they had some bargains! Will keep an eye out though. Homebase is also a bit of a drive away. You'd think living in london things would be nearby, but I find the opposite. All of the stores mentioned in this thread were within walking distance in norwich, but most are at least a few miles on a bus or a drive away in London!

Thanks all again for suggestions and kind offers to help, it's really appreciated! I'm not feeling quite so bad now. I just need to get my chillis on the go ASAP!

Here are three good and cheap online seed shops that I've used:

                              Premier Seeds Direct Ebay store
O-Z, Tomatoes items in Premier Seeds Direct store on eBay!

                              Just Seeds Ebay store
Vegetable seed, Flower items in Just Seed store on eBay!

                              More Veg
Moreveg sow grow eat and enjoy. Quality vegetable and herb seeds.

Premier is my overall favourite for price, seed quantities and range of varieties. More Veg is great for getting small quantities of lots of different and interesting varieties, but not such good value per seed as Premier. Just Seed has some things that the others don't.

Lidl is also very cheap for its basic range, which are mostly good German open pollinated varieties. The more expensive ones are mainly F1. Don't know if you get the same ones in the UK as we do here though. We don't have Aldi or Wilko or B&M.
