  • Long time allotment envier from Essex

Hello, I'm Dena and I'm a longterm garden and allotment envier and short term (in the last two weeks) allotment renter. I'm a mum of two, 14 and 5 y/o's, a part time student, writer and runner. I've lived in a flat for fourteen years and had no gardening experience other than a steady admiration for those who grow their own. I've recently began renting a 15ft by 60ft plot, in Clacton, Essex, which I've started to clear and plant a few beans on. I'm hoping to provide my family with some nutritious meals and cut some of the food bill costs for fresh food 'eventually'.

Thank you, I am enjoying the challenge thus far. I do have some pictures.

This is the first pic of the plot looking south.

This is after some digging looking north. The small child sprouted overnight.

Hello Dena and welcome. You've been working hard clearing your plot. For a quick fix, try covering some of the remaining grass/weeds with cardboard, until you get round to clearing that area. Starve them of light and they'll begin to die off.

Hi Dena, nice to have someone on board from fairly close to my neck of the woods.

Good luck with the new plot, looking good so far.

The lotties is great for cutting the food bills. You can grow expensive fruit and veg more cheaply (e.g. we picked nearly 3½lbs of blueberries so far this year from our one bush, which would cost £20 or more in Tesco). Alternatively you can produce shed loads of the basics like carrots, potatoes and lettuce for virtually nothing.

                  Anyway, enjoy your land!

Hello from a dank French Pyrenees. Enjoy your plot but be careful of getting a glut of small children
