  • Training young grapevine

    Hi
I'v had my lottie for 2months and need as much help as I can get.My recently planted vine needs training and I'm not sure how to do it.It's planted in the corner of my greenhouse and is growing so quickly it's nearing the roof of the greenhouse. It has 3 growing points and I wondered if I would be doing the right thing if I kept all three, one across the apex of the greenhouse and the other two along each side where the walls meet the roof, does anybody have a better idea, it's a Black Hamburg.
I have looked at all the info on the net about prunung but there's not much for young vines, help please, found your site by accident and it's great

You can keep all three growing points (or rods) if you like but it will tremendously shade your greenhouse, have a think about perhaps two. Anyway, tie theses in where you want them to go. When they get as long as you want them pinch out the tip.

Any side shoots can also be pinched out at 4 leaves and do this often as they are very vigourous. You may or may not get fruit, if you do stop the shoot a couple of leaves past the bunch and limit the plant to only 2-3 bunches this year, gradually increasing the amount year on year as the vine matures and takes its shape.

Thanks Piglet, is it too late to just keep two rods, will it bleed if I cut one off now, husband will not be pleased if it takes all the light but if I can't do anything about it til winter who cares I always wanted a grapevine I'll just enjoy it, thanks again
