  • Keep raspberry and blackcurrant plants in tunnel or evict?

I've got one raspberry and two blackcurrant plants in large pots in the polytunnel. They were all 'dead twig' plants from Poundland but have come on leaps and bounds since being planted. The raspberry especially always looks happy and there are small fruits forming on one side of the plant.

The blackberry plans seem fine too but they don't like the heat in the tunnel quite as much as the raspberry seems to and there are no fruits forming yet. If I'm too slow in opening the door on hot days, the blackberry starts to respond by having the odd wilting leaf here and there.

My problem is one of space, I could really use the area these plants are taking up and it would be simple enough to put the pots outside at the side of the tunnel where they would still get sun but clearly I wont if they would be better off left where they are. My previous blackberry plants died and my raspberry grew but never fruited and these were outside in pots.

So, leave or evict? I'm really not sure what to do.

They would be better off outside, in the ground if you can manage it. Blackberries are woodland plants and raspberries would prefer cooler too.

      Thanks for replying Wendy.

I'm happy that's your advice tbh, I was hoping someone would tell me they'd be better off outside.

Both should be better off outside in the ground.
Neither like full sun overly much and neither like getting dry.

I would assume that the raspberry's are standard summer fruiting so prune accordingly, the same for the blackberry.
