  • Yay, I got one! Ashford Kent

Finally, after years and years of waiting!

So, it's a new site and we need to clear it. I'm a total novice so where do I start?

Also, I need to get some compost there. I know someone on here offered some horse manure a few years ago, but I've no idea if they're still on here or if they have some going.

Is anyone near Great Chart in Ashford getting rid of well rotted herbie-poo?

Thanks Nicos. It has been a while. I've been otherwise occupied growing two new people in the time it's taken to get an allotment!

We went down to dig yesterday and hardly got anywhere. It's a completely new site, previously overgrown and bramble-infested so we've decided we'll need a rotavator. I'm sharing with a friend, but we've got five children including two babies between us. I was digging peasant-woman style with a baby strapped to my front (back would be better).

Don't rotavate brambles - even if you don't break the rotavator you'll spread weeds everywhere.

Heavy duty strimmer would cut the overgrownness down, then dig over.

There is a farm on the A20 just outside of Bearsted (towards Maidstone) that has a sign saying free manure.that's where I go and I'm ashford too

There is also 2 places on the A28 from Great Chart to Tenterden with signs for free manure.

Finally you have Blue Barn stables just on the corner of where great chart meets the A28 I'm sure they do free manure too.

            Hope that helps...

Congrats and as stated do not rotavate you will regret it in the long run. cut the brambles down dig up as much root as possible cover areas you aint going to use straight away lots of cardboard down in the other areas and go that way thats my experience
