  • To Paint on trunk to stop crawlies crawling up - Any ideas please

I seem to recall that there was something to paint around the trunk of fruit trees to stop pests which had over wintered in the ground crawling up the trunk and infesting the tree but for the life of me that's all I can remember about it.

Can anyone help my failing memory so I can get some please

Fruit tree grease, not on young trees though, not sure why !
Feed the soil, not the plants.
    (helps if you have cluckies)

I believe you can buy grease bands which are better for young trees with smooth trunks, but for older trees with knobbly bark these can leave gaps, so painting on grease is better

I used a large old pot of Vaseline that I had in the cupboard , worked well

Sent from my iPad using Grow Your Own Forum

It has two chances , up or down.

I've used vaseline before but didn't stop the ants (which was my main problem) and the aphids they farm on my apple trees

Fruit tree grease only slows the ants down, watched 4 yesterday crawl over it on to a pear tree, applied it about a week ago and it is still sticky.

We have always used car grease; a handful wiped on using a disposable glove. Primarily it was to stop rabbits gnawing the bark off (tasted nasty!), but it also stopped creepy crawlies and ants dead in their tracks. It lasts a long time too.

In Bulgaria fruit trees are painted with lime , it seems to work even though people on the internet ( probably who sell pesticides ) say it doesnt, almost the whole of eastern europe does it like this, on plum trees ( it seems to be only plum trees ) some people also add a band of cloth soaked with grease twisted tight onto the trunk after the lime
Living off grid and growing my own food in Bulgaria.....
