  • Hello from Sunny (for now) Sheffield!

Hello boys and girls! New and inexperienced gardener here, been at it a year having got myself a 6x10 greenhouse last spring after my fabric one got blown away! My 'proper' one also got blown over in the high winds before Christmas but I'm undeterred!

I also have a small raised bed, probably also about 6x10 in which I've just started square foot gardening!

I had a go at toms, potatos, corgettes, cucumbers, French beans, sweetcorn and peppers last year with varying success and have similar on the agenda this year, plus a few more 'below ground' veg... Never really got on with them, or rather always been dubious because I just don't know what's going on under there!

Thought I'd say hello and see if there are many other South Yorkshire folk knocking about who might have advice on what grows in the climate and soils of God's Country!

Ha, isn't that reassuring! The least I expected from a 'southerner'! I had better update my profile to declare my North Sheffield allegiances.

Dotty, real Southerners are fine, it's just South Sheffielders I have a grudge against!

Is it true the streets are paved with gold down there?!

I've never been one for harbouring dislike or distrust based upon the north / south divide... Until I took up gardening and now I'm jealous of your extra few degrees and marginally longer growing season!

Actually, I'm not a true southerner at all, have just ended up here!

Was born in Newcastle, lived as a child in a number of places including Sheffield ! Brought up in Scotland, children born East Anglia, etc,etc

So what's wrong with the people ofSouthern Sheffield?

                              Theres nothing wrong with them

I don't drive and get around Sheffield on the Bus / my Bike so It takes longer to get to South Sheffield than it would do to hop on a flight to the Canaries! As a result its a bit like when the Berlin Wall came down and either side of the city was (I imagine) slightly alien to the other!

I've spent my entire life in three houses all within 200 metres of each other so I'm also very protective of my 'hood, even if it does have the most horrifically claggy clay soil ever (to bring the conversation back onto a gardening track)
