  • A Big Hi from Me

After searching the sites for sometime, I thought I would say ' Hi ' to everyone.

I was looking for a new hobby so Im a total new starter to all this growing!

After last year growing a few strawberries in pots and some flowers (which I managed to keep alive through out the summer ) I now want to continue, got the growing Bug

I feel a bit restricted as I just have a paved area at the back of my flat no garden, it can get windy and the sun isn't around a great deal in the summer ( goes by about 2 ish in the afternoon, that's when we get it in the North east lol) Despite my restrictions Im up for the challenge, growing in pots.

Iv had a trips to Morrisons for the famous flower buckets that seem to have a lots of different ways to used them, got some great tips from this forum I also have a few grow bags and planters a few square flower buckets and a few of the famous blowaways! Bought enthusiastically in last years sales until I found this forum, but still going to trying them as im just starting off.

I hope to grow lettuce, radish, spring onions, maybe tomato plants some chilli's, courgettes, beetroot, spinach, trying aubergine and cape gooseberries (which I love) carrots. I have planted garlic and onions in Autumn and already had some winter mixed leafs grown in the blowaway over the winter. All of this will be grown in trial and error I expect

Im thinking of trying to persuade my mother into giving me a bit of her garden, which she has grown strawberries for around 15 years but now plans to make a Lawn! She gets a good deal of sun and if I over plant Lol (know I will) I will take some pots to hers - although she dosnt know of my plans yet

Hello and welcome to the Vine.

My mum gave over a bit of her garden to a friend who only had a paved yard. It has been very fruitful for both of them.

            You are not alone

It was my first time growing anything last year. Had a few failures but managed to grow salad, sweetcorn, carrots, toms, herbs, and tons more ....it's all doable. I'm a little further south than you but my yard is North facing, and it's amazing what can be grown in a small space.

Can I ask, how did you do with the sweetcorn. Big containers, lots of small ones? Would love to do sweetcorn this year, got the seeds, just need to know how to go about it, thanks

One huge container .... one of the fabric ones. There's photos on my blog (below), but I'm happy to answer any questions I can. They are wind pollinated so you need to grow them in a block, and the roots are rather meaty and don't like being disturbed. The biggest single planter you can find, the better.

I didn't do too bad in my first year, but I planted/sowed a little closer than recommended. Had I got a greater soil depth I think my harvest would have been better. They also start trying to root from a few inches above ground as they get tall, so you need a good depth of soil/compost to start with, but still be able to earth them up by a good few inches later in the season.

                      Couple of pics ...

Sorry, no pics at full height, but they got about 8ft tall and I had about 5 or 6 full ears, plus harvested some early as babycorn. I would strongly recommend a sunflower alongside too - the prescribed companion plant to keep the critters confused

Hi All, Thanks for the warm welcome, Love the Pics AllInContainers and thanks Bigmallly for the link

There is certainly a great deal of help and advice on here, full time hobby reading up on everything Lol

Looking forward to the growing season, although I have a 8 month old kitten who just loves to use my pots !! Will have to sort him out as already lost some garlic and onions and some strawberries!

Found that he dosnt really go on the pots that have plastic bags covering the soil, I had scardy cat plant all over last year to stop the neighbours cats using my paved area as a toilet it worked for while but when I got my little angel (oh I mean my devil in disguise lol) he wasn't remotely bothered buy my scardy cat plants at all.
