  • Mixed Orchard

    Hi

Is it ok to plan / plant a mixed orchard? i.e. An apple tree next to a lemon, next to an olive opposite a fig, next to a lime etc etc.

I know some varieties will need to be pollinated from another of the same type but is there any reason why this can not be done? Or it is better to have a block of apple or a row of lemon etc?

    Thanks

    Alex

I'm not certain, but can list a few for/against points:

    For:
    Lesser effect of pest infestations
Hampers the spread of some soil-born diseases

    Against:
More wind damage to individual trees (block planting may shelter plants on the inside).
    Less light for smaller trees.
    Netting may be harder
    Spraying may be harder

Personally I'd do it because it is more interesting

Thanks, I am not planting the trees too dense so your againsts should not affect (or is it effect?!) me too much and your fors have sold it, a mixed orchard it shall be!

I've a small mixed orchard at the bottom of the garden, we've plums, apples, pears and peaches.

Apart from the fact the trees are planted too close and need some hard pruning this year (original owners were clueless) we've had no problems at all
