  • Thinning apples

I have 2 minnarette apple trees in large pots, last year one of them had 1 mature apple (i shouldn't really have let it have any because they are young - but i couldn't resist!), it had loads and loads of blossom, and then loads of baby apples, but come the June drop - it lost all of them apart from 2!

The trees have possibly even more 'baby apples' this year after fantstic blossom, but i'm wondering if i should thin them before the June drop to get more mature fruit?

They are 3 years old now (at least - could be 4, i cant remember how old they were when i bought them)

Thanks LJ - i'd forgotten to read my KM book before posting! However - i just have, and it doesn't say anything about thinning before the June drop - just that 'in some years the June drop is unusually heavy with only a sparse crop remaining'.

Oh well - i guess i'll just have to wait to see what i have left after natural drop - i'd just like to pick more than one apple this year!

Ah ha! gotcha. We'll see how many it sheds in June and go from there.

      Thanks LJ
