They remind me of sausages that have burst their skins Probably too much water at some time made them put on a growth spurt and .Ping!!! all their buttons popped

I would say inconsistent watering, but I could be wrong.
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it.
If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

I 've had this happen as I've been lifting them. Pull them out the ground then 'crack' the carrot splits open. Its as if the soil pressure keeps the little blighters together.
Maybe if the soil was lighter and didn't act so much like a girdle it may help? Failing that its got to be water related.

Inconsistant watering, then a sudden watering when they are in full growth, causes them to split. Perfectly edible though

I'm going to be planting my first carrots today, should I water everyday? They will be in the allotment not pots

No, there is never any need to water an allotment every day. It's the worst thing you can do as it encourages roots to stay near the surface.

Stick a finger in, if it's dry that far down they need watering Goes for pretty much anything else too.

No, you don't need to water the allotment every day. Once a week is fine (if it hasn't rained)

The guide I'm now using is 12 litres of water per sq.metre a week, increasing to 22 litres if the crop is flowering/fruiting

There is a lot of water in the soil on an allotment, even though you wouldn't think so to look at it. Think how the weeds spring up from nowhere: there is water down there.

New transplants need a bit more to get them started, but established plants not much at all
