    It's difficult to tell from the picture but it looks as though your Nan could be right.

      Could it be a Kerria? Was the picture taken a few months back as that is when they flower.

          Really need to see the flowers and a closeup of the leaves to be sure but I think its kerria too - probably Kerria japonica pleniflora BBC - Gardening: Plant Finder - Kerria
          Mine is still in flower

                    Mimosa is a really fast-growing tree - very common here. It flowers in february and has the most amazing perfume. Gorgeous.
