  • a question for welsh grapes please

while getting excited about our forthcoming holiday to Melton Mowbray the discussion ran on to where to go for october half term. Now can any of you recommmend some nice beaches or an area near to a beach in south wales? I've never been so have absolutely no idea. We preferrably want one we can take the dogs on (although its not till the end of october so not normally a problem) Oh yes, and if you've happened to notice any caravan club sites nearby!

    thanks in advance

What a difficult question Mrs W
Most of our South Wales beaches are lovely but the further west you go, the clearer the water becomes - because tides, up and down the Bristol Channel stir up the sand as the estuary narrows and make the water murkier.
Swansea/Gower and westward through Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire or round the corner into Cardiganshire - the water is clearer and all very beautiful.
You should be OK with dogs on beaches after the end of September but this may help Colins Wales Tourism Guide
Caravan sites - lots but I don't know any details sorry!

For me, West Wales is the best.. St Davids / White Sands is amazing. Though, there's Llangennith / Most places in / around the gower are quite nice too... More so Swansea way, so not as far If you didn't want to travel that far then Rest Bay around Porthcawl is alright, but the Gower is nicer (IMHO).

A real welshie will probably be able to direct you better though

Llanrhidian would be ok, a smallish village though so don't expect much. Close by are Llanrhidian marshes, loads of birds and wildlife, also lots of wild ponies and sheep so dogs may need to be on a lead, (lots of Gower has common rights with livestock having access to large areas). Cilibion/Llanrhidian is on the edge of Cefn Bryn, again diverse wildlife and animals roaming about. Super walks and views of most of Gower, if you go to King Arthur's Stone you can look out over the marshes towards Llanelli and West Wales is in the distance. The King Arthur Hotel is just down the hill and makes a nice place to stop for a cuppa/drink or food, though they don't allow dogs inside but there is plenty of seating outside.

Llangennith beach (about 5 miles away) is gorgeous and the owners have their own camp fields. A huge beach about 3 miles long with dunes, rock pools, and small cliffs depending which part of the beach your on. Great walks over to, Llanmadoc, Rhossili etc. The Greyhound Inn, Old Walls is dog friendly and has great food, also a micro brewery. The King's Head Llangennith allows dogs to visit too.

Gower's mostly an outdoorsy sort of place, though Mumbles is not far and is a nice spot to visit with some shops and good places to eat. Oxwich Bay, Three Cliffs Bay, Port Eynon and Rhossili are all super beaches to visit too, with a mixture of sandy bays, loads of rock pools and some cracking cliff walks scenery/views are stunning.
