  • Starting off brick compost /vermicomposting

We had lots of bricks left so I found instructions on the internet of how to make a compost bin out of it. It also said not to use mortar but just leave some space between the bricks.

It's a bit wobbly at the moment but I haven't filled it yet.

Now I would like to do vermicomposting and I am about to order tiger worms. Will I still need to add a starter to it if I have the worms? They come with bedding so I presume I'll have to use the same layers - Start off with waste like leaves - the put worms and bedding in and some finished compost on top?

    Do you have trays?

Normally wormeries have trays where the worms live in the top tray and the compost falls through to the lower trays.

A wormery is completely different to a compost heap Judy. See here How to build a wormery - The Gardeners Calendar

You really want to take advantage of the worm tea that drains off the compost and that means being able to catch it and tap it off. I don't know how you can do this with a gappy brick "bin" unless you line it with something.

mmhh.. I have seen this: 3 Ways to Make Your Own Worm Compost System - wikiHow

And that looks pretty gappy to me..that's pretty much the same my compost looks - couldn't I just get a cover or inlay for the same effect?
