  • Newbie - Growing asparagus from seed.

    Hi all, great forum.

I'm new here and quite new to the vegetable growing world, so excuse any stupid questions.

I've started growing asparagus from seed, in a 2" pot. I have been growing them indoors, they're now about 5" tall, what do I do next?

Do I need to pot them on to bigger pots, pou them into the shed etc. Also at what point do I plant them out?

Thanks all, look forward to more silly Q's from me.

Male plants are said to be more productive, so you might want to sex them when you can, and discard the female ones... the only really difference is the female ones will create seed so you'll end up with plants everywhere

Hi Grandy, a 2" pot is nowhere near big enough. Pot them on now into 3 and a half inch pots for now. They can stay indoors for now on your windowsills where they should get enough light, and when the frosts have finished can go outside.

I wouldn't advise putting them in a shed as it will be too dark for them.

By the way Grandy, welcome to the Vine. Whereabouts are you? If you add your location (nearest town) to your profile it will show on your posts and helps a lot when giving advice.

I've never bothered with Asparagus although I do so love it. Waiting several years to get a crop so isn't me.

Perhaps one of the Mods would correct the spelling in the thread title so we can find this thread with a search later. My patience may well surface as I grow older. I hope to not always be a Grampy Auld Git

Good luck with your Asparagus Grandy
