  • The 'What I Did Today' Archive - 2007

    Mod's Edit:

The 'What I Did Today' Archive - 2007
The 'What I Did Today' thread is something of an institution on the Grapevine, having started and been run continuously since 2006. At nearly 7 years old (at the time of writing this) it had grown to over 300 pages, and was becoming difficult to browse. So we have decided to separate the posts into a thread for each year, and put them into the Archive for ease of use, keeping only the current and previous year in the active thread.

This thread is for 'What I Did Today', 2007.

    Things I did today.
This is intended to act as an aid memoir to everyone on the grapevine. I hope it will help remind us of tasks that should be carried out at the time of year each posting is written.
It is not intended to be a Blog or a journal but simply an aid to help. I hope everyone will post what they did in their garden or allotment each day.

Renewed 2 fence panels and posts which had been destroyed by the strong winds. Also turned the compost heap which is going to be dug into the herb bed in March. Can't wait for the sun to shine though!

Had my first day off since before the 18th of December where I havent got friends or family round, so the first chance for a very lazy day! Off again tomorrow and planning to get down to the plot and finish pruning the goosegogs and sorting out the other soft fruits at the back of the plot, then back home to start off gerinating some plants ready for planting in the not too distant future!!

Just wish the ground would dry out a bit so we can get the other bed and an 1/8th bed double dug!
        Blessings

Had a session in the greenhouse planting broad beans, the Sutton, using old toilet roll tubes, and onions in trays in preparation for a great year ahead.

Renewed the pvc sheeting one one of the cloches but the nursery ran out of it so the rest of them will have to wait - it was a bit too windy anyway today.

Weather was much better today than its been for a while, (ok, it was a bit cold and very windy, but no rain!!) so we managed to get down the plot for a few hours! The soil is still far too wet to be digging, so we spent the time pruning our 3 gooseberry bushes, moving one bramble further back (it was growing amongst one of the goosegogs!) and cleaning out the pond, which now looks a lot better!

Just as we were about to leave Mr D noticed that under one of the covered beds something was pushing up the covering, so we pulled it bacj to investigate, only to find that the 3 rows of tatties that we planted in September (they were sprouting ones we'd brought from the supermarket, so we tried them to see if they managed to do anything, and they never did anything at that point) seem to have thrown up shoots and are now showing a couple of small leaves each! Seems a lot too early to me, but we earthed them up to protect the stalks a bit and left them uncovered, who knows if the frosts hold off we may even get some early overwintering taties! If nothing comes of it, then its no loss, but I suppose its worth a go to see if they can make it!

Not what I've done today, but what I'm going to do at the weekend....

Smoke bomb the greenhouse (sulphur bomb)... now my vines are truly dormant, I'm going to kill all the weeds and insects!

Buy seeds from the GC and see what else to spend my vouchers on

Plant out the last of my flower bulbs even though I'm a bit late due to flooding and hope they come up

Prune my fruit trees (plums, pears and apples)

Mow the lawns if its not too wet

Mow the lawn????!!!! I can't even get my tulip bulbs in the ground its so wet! I'm going to have to put them in pots or they;ll be sprouting in their packets.

Aerodynamically the bumblebee shouldn't be able to fly, but the bumblebee doesn't know that so it goes on flying anyway.
