    Shady plants to grow from seed

    Hi, i have lots of areas in my garden of both dry and wet shade that I want to fill with shade loving plants but most are quite expensive when you buy them in large pots etc.

    Are there any good shade loving plants that I can easily grow from seed?

    Think about woodland or hedgerow flowers - foxgloves are easy from seed, Honesty, the clump forming geraniums and cranesbills....

      Bluebells do well from cast seed.

        Is it too late to sow foxgloves this year? Also can you grow ferns from seed?

          Foxgloves should be OK but they're biennial so don't expect flowers next year.
          I've no idea about ferns sorry. Lots of plants grow in partial shade - I have nothing else in my garden!
          Is it seasonal shade that you have - from trees? If so go for early flowering plants like primroses and spring bulbs.

            More like north facing walls and fences that dont get much sun and spent most of the day in shadow.

              You could grow something up the walls like honeysuckle. Maybe not grow it from seed but you should be able to find some rooted bits if you know anyone who has some.

                I actually have a small bit of honey suckle in the garden, whats the best way to propogate it?

                  Have a look around your plant and see if it has layered itself. If so, you can dig up the rooted part and transplant it. Otherwise Honeysuckle (Lonicera) / Royal Horticultural Society

                    I've got a north facing wall in my back garden. Forsythia does well, as does a huge camellia and Euonymus.

                          I have a big geranium bush...mourning widow I think its called. Its amazing, I just dig up a clump and replant it elsewhere! It grows in both sunshine and shade.
                          Definately recommended!
