  • Big garlics?

    Hello everyone

Was wondering today if there is any particular type of garlic that grows well in the UK and produces large garlic bulbs?
I know about elephant garlic which is really a leek, does that produce cloves?

Ideally something like an Atlantic Giant for garlic?

    TIA

Apart from the elephant garlic, which as you say isn't a true garlic, I've found that the size of the bulbs varies from year to year because of growing conditions. I've tried all sorts, from quite expensive stuff from the Isle of Wight and T&M to the cheap variety at Wilkinsons and some years they've been small (especially this year) and others they've been a nice size. It would be good if someone knows of a guaranteed big variety!

That's the conclusion I'm coming to as well.

It seems that larger cloves will produce larger bulbs though....

In case its not obvious, am not after garlics the size of an atlantic giant!

But yes, a guaranteed big variety would be good to know.

      Thanks

I'd suggest saving the biggest bulbs from this year and sowing the biggest cloves of these next year - that's what I've been doing for the past five years and now my garlic bulbs are about half as big again as the puny ones that I see in the supermarket.
