    Radishes

    I pulled up a couple of radishes last week (Delicious they were too) and left the others to grow on a bit more. Decided to pull up the rest today and roughly 2/3 of them had no bulb to them... All about the same size in leaf. The ones that did produce were marble size and very nicely formed.

    Making me worry about my other veg that's under the surface now!

    What went wrong with the non bulb ones please.. Any ideas welcomed?

    Were they def radishes?
    I'd have left them to see what happened.

      Yes they were deffo radishes... The ones that didn't bulb up didn't show any signs of doing so, they were just large leaves and roots! The ones that did bulb were 100% good

        dont worry i try and grow raddishes every year but i always have the same problems as you, i.e. no bulb forming. But im startin to wonder whether im planting them deep enough, i think i am, or maybe its because they are starting to go to seed due to the weather, therefore all the energy is going into the plant rather than the bulb! - thinking about it i think its probably due to the weather causing them to bolt!

          I think that you have confirmed my thoughts.... Just seemed strange how some of them were absolutely perfect but most not!

              I had the same problem with mine. Maybe a quarter were decent and radishy looking and the rest went on the compost heap!
              Too much rain and not enough sun.

                I keep leaving mine in for longer and longer, but, like the rocket and some other veg, plants seem to be growing taller instead of producing bulbs, with luscious leaf growth because of all the rain? but then going to seed etc? dunno if weather or just ME lol

                  The ground being constantly wet does not help as this can stunt root growth.

                    I found radishes one of the easiest and quickest things to grow. Shame after 2 years of pretending/trying to convince myself otherwise, I finally accepted that I don't really like them Typical.

                      I usually find them the easiest and quickest to grow and get a good crop for salads. THIS year? I've just literally been out acutally in the rain tto check them and most have bolted to seed with FLOWERS even on some and STILL no bulb/root growth - so luch foliage so little root development? shrugs

                        I think it is overcrowding that causes this - and then if they get too dry they run to seed very quickly. They need close supervision I reckon.

                            My raddishes are brilliant this year, just under gold ball sized in no time if I don't pick um quick! Brand new multipurpose compost in a raised bed. Dotted around and between things as a quick crop whilst others grow on. Spacing is minimum 2" about 1/2" deep - not in rows just here and there.

                              I pulled some of mine yesterday and had similar - some good sized, some no bulb at all. I'd sown them (first time growing them) in modules, a pinch to a module, and there's no clear pattern in behaviour - some pinches are all no bulb, some have one large bulb and the rest no bulb, and some are all bulbing. I pulled the bulbed ones and left the smaller ones in hoping the space will encouraging them to bulb, but the looser soil may upset them (brassicas after all).

                              I also pulled at least four baby turnips as apparently I can't tell the difference...
