Just wondering if it is worth giving them shade next time it reaches 100 degrees in the greenhouse at mid day?

How did they respond to it this time?
My chillies are still on my kitchen windowsill but my sweet peppers are now in the greenhouse and seemed quite happy at 40°C (104° fahrenheit).Tried and Tested...but the results are inconclusive

AHAHAHA! *ahem* Yes. They will love it. You might get some chillies that taste of something.
I grew up in New Mexico, where a substantial chunk of the local economy is based on chilli farming. And it's regularly over 100 F for several months in the summer. And it's at high elevation and very dry, so there is a lot of sun. Have a look at Las Cruces, NM, which is where all the NuMex chilli varieties (Twilight, Big Jim, Joe E. Parker, etc.) were bred.March is the new winter.Comment

I think chilies were made to be in the hot, hot weather. My grandmother grew chilies in our extreme sunshine and they did just fine.Comment

I knew it was a daft question but had to be sure! thanks a bunch.
ate one of the cayenne's last night and it was like eating a leave from the plant. no heat what so ever. No doubt its the lack of sunshine!Comment

When they're grown up enough I'd say yes, but I lost loadsa seedlings in March when we had that week of constant sun. They were on the bathroom windowsill.Comment

My chilli's all really ripen quickly when it is really hot.
They do need good watering as my scotch bonnet & Harbanero's are sucking leaves when I get in from work if I forget to water in the morning.
but my Chenzo & Twilights do much better!
But yes last year they loved the sun!Chilli Grower

Are most chillis native only to warmer climate lands, when you think about spicy food they are all warm climate countries (mexican, thai, indian etc)Comment
