Hi,I too am fairly new to the growing your own lark its hard work but enjoyable too.If I can offer some advice i was given and its to dig a bit, plant a bit.Saves on the pesky weeds coming through before you get stuff planted.Spuds will grow in virtually any soil type and will be good to break up the soil. And another bit of advice is plant peas and they add I think its nitrogen,to the soil.I dont grow peas.dont like em that much.End of the year get a load of wel rotted horse manure and dig it in.If you live in an area where theres loads of trees, collect the leafs, and make about a meter square wire mesh "bin" and fill it with leafs. When the leafs rot down you can dig that in too. Just make sure you dig out any sign of weed as when you cultivate it chops the weeds up making more.Thats all i was told hope it helps, dont rush to get too much in this year just get the ground work done right and i would prob cover the ground left bare to stop weeds coming back.Good luck.

Put the remove turf upside down in a stack in a years or so time it will make wonderful loam to add to your patch. You will obviously have to dig the patch over before planting but apart from that it should be OK for the first year. If you are uncertain you could always add a little BFB of growmore.

I wouldn't feel the need to add anything. If it's grown grass OK, it can grow veggies. You can add any fertilisers when the veg is growing, if they look like they need feeding.

Over the years, you should be adding garden compost, animal manures if you want to, leafmould etc.
