  • Rosemary help

I have planted Rosemary several times. It germinates beautifully but then shrivels up and dies before it gets properly established. My Mum used to have a huge plant in her garden that lasted year to year and flowered beautifully. I'd like to try again, any tips to help me out please?

I've grown rosemary really successfully from cuttings.
Take a nice young shoot pref in the springor summer, about 3 or 4 inches long, remove bottom 1/2 of leaves and pinch out top. Pop in a pot of nice moist compost and leave somewhere warm but not in direct sunlight. Spray gently with water daily. I'd take several cuttings at fortnightly intervals.
Once you get some new growth you can pot on into individual pots.
    good luck!

I think cuttings is the way to go. Also remember that rosemary is a mediterranean plant and hates having cold wet feet.

When I take cuttings I use a mix of compost and sand to get them going

it needs sun, dry soil, the occasional soak, and room to spread a bit.
Keep it out of a howling wind too. I planted one that more or less took the brunt of a wind-tunnel caused by the way the side of the house and the fence funneled the wind, and until I broke the stream a bit it looked a bit straggly.
I planted another one about 5 foot away from the original one, it's turned into a mini triffid.
          There is hope

Agree with Rustylady - add sand or horti grit to the planting hole for drainage.

I did heal cuttings in 2010 but they died overwinter, not to give up I did more heal cuttings first week in September 2011 and these have taken and were potted on last week.
Both times I used half compost half sharp sand.

If you take cuttings, take from the new wood, not the old tough wood, and fill a pot with whatever you want [I just use earth now], then put them down the sides of the pot between the pot and the stuff in the pot. It helps them form roots, don't ask me how....it just does....
                  same way for lavender.

I recommend feeding every few weeks with liquid seaweed - rosemary loves this food.

I did not know this and I have been watering mine daily.
Mine is three years old and I recently transplanted it into a barrel so it could spread.
I would hate to end up killing it at this stage.
I am not sure about the drainage in the barrel, so will watch it closer.
(I believe the soil is dirt mixed with wood shavings?)
Also, I now have it in direct sunlight as opposed to partial shade.

Also avoid planting next to Basil.
Some people start herb gardens and put them all in together?
