  • Sour Grapes.....

    ......and very tiny too.

My two potted red grapevines are smothered in bunches of grapes, and starting to turn colour. However, the grapes are still very tiny and are probably very sour too.

They are in very big planters, in almost full sun, get fed and watered regularly, so where have I gone wrong?

You're in Sommerset, rather than Sardinia

Sorry can't help, but will be interested to know why too.

Sounds as if you have let the vines carry too many bunches of fruit.

Not too many bunches of fruit and most bunches need to be thinned when the grapes are about the size of a pea. To get larger grapes you nees to snip about half to two thirds of the tiny grapes to let the others grow. Long slow process!!!!!!! Leave the grapes until the first ones look like splitting and you should have sweet grapes.

I have such a heavy crop this year that I have had to take off half or the weight would have broken the vine. The rose ones are just beginning to turn colour but it will be another month before they are ripe enough too eat.
