  • Help for the better half

My better half (I'm not brave, I know my place) has a Honeysuckle that is a bit out of control, she's scared to touch it in case it doesn't come back, she cut one back at our previous house, and sadly, it never came back, so she is a bit nervous of tackling this one, our son put a trellis up for it, but its not taking to it too well, its very thin low down, but very thick and bushy the higher it gets, any tips for cutting it back and thinning it out, and basically getting it under control so it'll keep growing will be most welcome.

It's very thin low down because it's not been pruned properly. Time of year is important ~ do it early spring when the new growth starts showing

If you don't prune it, this will get worse every year until you have lots of bare stalks with flowers right at the top

I'm following this thread for all the wrong reasons. My plot neighbour has a honeysuckle growing up his fence alongside the path and I'll swear the thing is related to a tryphid. It frequently tries to cross the path to attach itself to my fence (or any poor unsuspecting creature that passes by). It certainly seems well able to survive having all these straggly stems snapped off by its intended victims without any problem.
