  • hello,any help appreciated

I'm new to this so sorry if I'm doing it wrong,I have a huge ants nest in my compost bin and there are flying ants in there,I know I need to turn it to disturb them but I have a phobia of flying ants and I don't really want to kill them off because I like nature, should I leave the lid off to let the ants fly away and if I do how long before they go? I shouldn't have let the little beasties get so carried away but I thought they were harmless enough until the nest got to about the height of the actual compost bin, oops.

    Hi

If they are at the flying stage, leave the lid off and then will have flown by early evening. Then stick a couple of cans of water into the heap and give it a good turn.

P.s. Hi and welcome by the way!

Hello Jester and welcome to the Vine. When you've sorted out the ants as Dave has suggested, come back and see us again!

Like Dave said, leave the lid off so they can get on their way. Then if you are like me, run for cover - I hate the bladdy things. Crawling ants I can deal with, but not the flying ones.
