  • Climbing/Rambling Rose Questions

I am looking to plant a shade-tolerant climbing or rambling rose to climb up a wall on my patio.

I'm not yet sure exactly which I will opt for as climbers are better for walls, but ramblers are more shade-tolerant. This wall on my patio is south-west facing but due to a wall on the other side only gets the late afternoon sun.

My questions are: can a rose bush live happily in a large pot? How wide or deep would a pot/trough need to be? Which would you opt for - a climber or a rambler?

    Thank you for any suggestions.

This has been asked before, but I can't remember the name of the thread in order to search for it ... how frustrating

update: I did make a note of the variety that was recommended, I'll have a look through my diary ...

Sorry TwoSheds I should have searched myself before asking the question. I've seen there are a few climbing rose threads on here (one by myself lest summer - oops) but the main thing I want to know now is how deep their roots need to be and whether they will tolerate being in a pot all their life, and if so how big it needs to be.

Roses don't do well in pots unless they are the "patio" type (ie small). My brother has a Virgo in a pot, but it does dry out and it's not got very big. It's also always covered in aphids & blackspot (plants under stress are definitely more susceptible to pests & diseases)

The rose that I had in mind was Alberic Barbier, that someone said did well in shade
I've bookmarked it to grow up my shady east-facing garage wall

Rightio, I have bought this rose - White Star rose, as it seems to be ok for container growing, shade-tolerant and climbing! And I think its very pretty too, and it will be fragrant as a bonus. Hopefully arriving on Wednesday.

I am now wondering what would be a suitable pot to purchase for it. I'd prefer rectangular pots if poss as its to go on my not very big patio to run along the wall, so I'd prefer not to have big round or square pots.

I've found a large wooden planter/trough - the 6th one on this list: UK Garden Supplies Wooden Planters - do you think it'd do? Would it need lining? Or can I just put drainage material in, compost and then done?

            Thanks for any help.

A good climbing rose for shade is Madame Alfred Carriere. Don't think it would work in a pot though.
