  • Geranium cuttings

I took about 150 cuttings from the trailing geraniums in my hanging baskets last year and I think just about every one has rooted. My problem is that, although they are growing well, they are a bit 'leggy'. A neighbour says I shouldn't cut them back or pinch the tops out. Is he right?

I know grapes will come up with the answer

I'd pinch out. They need to bush before trailing or you'll have a load of single threads instead of a mass of colour. Good luck with it. (And well done for getting them through the worst winter I can remember!)

I could do with knowing your secret as everyone of mine died.

Your nickname says it all.150 cuttings? You've got my respect.

I'd pinch them to encourage more bushy growth.I'm going to pinch my cuttings once they are rooted(I'm trying to root a bit different geranium-lemon scented one which is probably the most hated plant by cats)

Thanks everyone - just finished pinching them out............I probably could have got cuttings from the cuttings!
I think I was just lucky. I took the cuttings in late October and kept them frost free. I bought a load of those unheated propagators when Wilko's had them cheap and shoved the cuttings 5 to a pot in the propagators which were in an unheated greenhouse (until late January). We had so much ice and snow I thought there was no chance of them surviving but they did....................more than likely a one off.
