  • Price of Allotment ?

We've just got our first allotment and after reading around it seems to be on the higher price side and just wondered what everybody pays per year and for how much as our council are robbing gits.

    Here's mine ...

    Where: Nr Blackpool, Lancs
How Big: just over 6 rods (although states 240 sq yards - yeah right)
    Price: £68 per year
If at first you don't succeed .. try and not be too surprised.

Ours is 1/16th of an acre ,which is a half plot ( don't know how that equates to rods) and has just gone up to £25 per year. I think a full plot is £40. We run it ourselves ie, hedges , paths, pay own water bills etc and just pay an overall rent to the council.

I'm on a private site in South Wales and pay £7 per year for a half plot.
The £7 includes water and membership of an allotment society. There is a rumour going round that the fees might go up to £8 next year.

I've said it before - I'm very very lucky I know.

Prices seem to vary massively, from what I've read though (on here) 30-40 squid seems acceptable. We pay £8 a year. Think it's a full plot - not sure about rods but we get nowt. No water, no toilets, compost or anything like that. Do you get any extras? Do the council tend to the upkeep? It does sound a lot but it depends on what they provide.

Your only being had if you are the only person on the site that is paying this much, if this is the going rate in your area and you agreed to pay this then this is the way the cookie crumbles, its a bit like do I buy milk from the corner shop for £1.50 or from the supermarket for a £1 the choice is yours, I have what is classed as 4 plots 1 full size and three 3/5th of a plot I pay £42.50 for the three small plots and I pay £ 27.50 for the full plot, it suits my needs and I am happy to pay this.

I don't know how you're going to manage to pay for the rent increase!

10 rods for £27, we do all maintenance, ie strimming ourselves. Water is metered, we split the bill so that's around £7 each per annum

Ours is £18 for a half plot, this includes water, over 60's get a reduction. If you work it out wekly its still very cheap, for you its just over £1.30p a week, mines 34p a week. Bargains I'd say and I would be prepared to pay more, just dont tell the council lol.

We're on a private allotments. This year the rent was about £32. We have quite a small plot 4m x 15m (not sure what that is in rods), which the owner edges with tall chestnut fence posts, it is then up to the renter to attach their own rabbit fencing and gates. We do get water supplied, and there is one communal stone shed. We aren't allowed to have sheds on our plots, but to be honest they'd take up too much room anyway.

I like to look at it this way, imagine how much money I'd throw away on a gym membership I'd never use every year, and they don't give you loads of fruit and veg with a gym membership. Horse riding lessons are about £15/£20 an hour round here...two of those is the same as the cost of my lottie.

I appreciate that you feel your plot is expensive, I guess you just need to make the very most out of it. Why not try to keep a spreadsheet of what you spend on rent, seeds, tools etc against what you save if you had to go and buy all the fruit and veg you harvest. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised

I'm paying £50 a year, but think it's a bargain with water taps about every 4th plot, secure 10ft fencing around the site - I did have to pay an extra £7 for the gate key, toilets and a clubhouse with kettle, microwave and fridge, bark chippings are provided free two or three times a year and a skip twice a year for non compostable rubbish. The site runs a shop for a couple of hours each Saturday and Sunday morning in the main season with discounted seeds, fleece, pots, canes, bubblewrap etc for sale. All in all, I'm well pleased.

Bit more than yours, but doesn't recieve anything either.. think of it weekly though, what's that like £1.40? If you can harvest £1.40's worth of food from it a week, you're breaking even Plus, as mentioned the exerice for almost £6/month is surely worth it ?

I'd happily pay that much for an allotment, the waiting lists around here are huge!
