    small, compact flowers for winter

    I'd like to plant a few flowers in window boxes around now, i need them to be fairly small though as they are only going in window boxes and in some pots outdoors. want some colour ful ones if possible

    im gonna either buy some bulbs/seeds or head to a garden centre and buy some plants. nice to know what poeple are planting and what everyone else likes

      If you plant crocuses now they'll look good in early spring when not much else is about. You can mix them in with plants so you can have something for now as well.

        I have viola (much better than pansies) and primula flowering now, then everything has a rest in the depths of winter until the hellebores, snowdrops and other spring bulbs come along after Xmas

          I agree with TS, violas are much better than pansies (much more weather-proof IMHO). I'm adding some tiny hebes and small grasses look good too (although they don't count as flowers :-) )

                For troughs and tubs I'd go for violas and cyclamen - in fact I just have! and underplant with spring squills or a small daff - a cylamineus or similar.
                Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

                  I've had primulas flowering all winter too - on a shady windowledge. At the moment my troughs are full of tiny cyclamen - very bright and colourful - watch out for the vine weevil though.
                  Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?
