  • Newby want info on growing grapes

That would be grapes the fruit not grapes the forum posters!

Just got my first greenhouse and all that is in it at the moment is a brush and a potting bench. It's quite small at 6'x4' but that is all the space I had spare. It has a nice southward-ish aspect and I'm ready to get going.

My daughter wants me to grow grapes for her (she's 3 and loves the garden and wildlife). Trouble is, I have no idea what to grow, how to grow it or where to get seed from. All my grapes from safeway are seedless!!

I would appreciate any help you good people could offer even it is "don't bother - try something easier first"

Hello and welcome to the Vine.

I have a couple of vines that I planted last year - I bought them from Woolworth and they are supposed to be okay outdoors. Just been out to check them and I think they have buds on them now - no green yet though.

Both are in large pots at the moment as I haven't decided on their final positions. I don't know if my method is going to work - but I didn't pay much for the plants as they were half-dead when I bought them so I will just see what happens.

I think a 6 x 4 greenhouse would be taken over by a vine and would suggest you get an outdoor one. You can buy vines at garden centres, Woolworths (small ones), Wilkinsons and probably most of those types of stores. Cost will be affordable anyway - garden centres will have bigger vines which are closer to producing.

I am sure there will be more knowledgeable grapes along soon to answer your query properly

Good luck and I suggest growing a cucumber for your daughter in the greenhouse (if she likes those) as they are great fun for kids to watch growing.
    Happy Gardening,
    Shirley
