  • Is it worth freezing potatoes?

We've dug up enough potatoes to fill several sacks, but also have approx
1cwt that look ok apart from having been got at by slugs. We've thrown the worst ones away but are undecided what to do with the rest - we wondered if we should cut off the 'damaged' parts, cut the remainder into chips (most of them are large potatoes) and then freeze.

If it is worthwhile freezing them - would you blanche the chips or part-fry them in oil?

    Any advice / guidance appreciated.
    Thanks

      Freezing Potatoes
Thanks ... I did a quick google yesterday, but didn't find that site .. more options than I thought, however, wondering if it's worth the effort freezing them as some veg not very 'nice' when used after freezing.

I'm hoping someone who has frozen potatoes will let us know if they were successful or not.

I've done frozen chips from home grown before [as a mistake as we had to go out when the chips were half done].

I had peeled and chipped them, and put them on a tray with frylite and cooked them for 20 mins; then as we had to go out, I scraped the lot into a freezer box and froze them and cooked them in the oven a few months later when i remembered, and they were lovely!

I do all my chips the slimming world way, it's the norm in our house....

I freeze mash - then when it defrosts you add the milk and butter etc. It's always fine

I also freeze mash plain and add my flavouring later (it often defrosts a little bit watery but once it has been heated through and mixed in, it tastes fine). If I want to add as a topping to a shepherds pie or something then I defrost in the fridge overnight otherwise I microwave it.

I freeze roasties - peel, cut to size (depending on mood sometimes small homefries and sometimes larger roasties), blanche and then freeze. I cook these from frozen and they taste delicious

Have only ever frozen potatoes as dry mash (don't add butter or milk etc to it anyway as I think it makes it slimy) and have used it in fishcakes etc but as said above it can be a bit watery. Never frozen them raw but know that they go squidgy when the freeze in the ground so am guessing they'd be better cooked for frozen rather than defrosted.

I've been steaming my new potatoes, and any leftovers are frozen as mash

I've frozen par boiled chips and they were fine to eat after several months.
