  • Pickled Beets

    Hi Folks

Our family absolutely love pickled beetroot and so get about 10 jars a year from my garden and allotment that i got this year
    My question

Because peeling and slicing is so messy

What do you use to make the jobs easier

    Any ideas welcome
    Cheers .... John

I don't: it's just not cost-effective when pickled beetroot is about 42p a jar in Morrisons: the vinegar alone is more than that if you make your own

Latex gloves when peeling the beets, also found just squeezing them they pop out of their skins when ready.

Tesco sell their value vinegar for 2.3p per 100ml. I use Compare Supermarket Prices to help me work out the costs and find the best deals.

I used Sarsons pickling vinegar and at 13.1p per 100ml
        For 1 800g jar i used roughly 300ml of vinegar 39.3p
add a conservative estimate of 20p power consumption for cooking time, for 4 jars = add 5p per jar
Jars frees from wherever i can get them.
        roughly 45p per jar.

the largest supermarkets jars i can find are sold as 710g for roughly £1.15 (special offer) to £1.80

Work out the saving if you used tesco value vinegar and it comes in at about 15p a jar, although not sure what they would taste like.

I haven't tried it, but what about using an egg slicer? or a food processor. Still messy but might be quicker. I don't know about you but i prefer to cut slice dice while they are still hot and bottle them asap.

You can get a white beetroot which doesn't bleed so no mess. It also tastes exactly the same, though doesn't look as good in the jar, its just white and brown, whereas the red stuff always looks sweeter.

I'm on the side of making your own, shop bought pickled beetroot is sour and unpleasant compared to making your own.

I always buy a cheap vinegar, it doesn't affect the final taste, english mustard though always.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

It's definitely worth doing as the taste of the home made is so much better than the bought stuff which I don't really like. I buy cheapish plain vinegar and then boil it up with the spices I want before adding to the beetroots. Simply roast the beets in the oven in foil, let go cold, slide the skins off and chop (on a plastic plate). A bit messy but not too bad and just make sure you scrub your hands afterwards.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
