  • Peony Buds Dying

We have two two-year old peonies, both in the same part of the front garden. On both we have had a couple of healthy flowers, but I've just noticed that the remaining buds (still closed tightly) have gone brown and dropped off, or are about to.

They have been moved, but flowered since then, and I THINK they are planted at the correct depth (I know peonies can be fussy about it).

I'm a bit baffled - the plants otherwise look healthy. Any ideas?

I think that it is just a case of too hot and too dry and I wouldn't worry. Others may think differently. Mine are doing the same but they have been well cooked at 34C for a couple of days and I am almost forgetting the last time we had rain. I lost all the flowers on the tree peony to a late frost. I will remember to protect it next year.

Hope things are better next year

this happened to mine as well. i had transplanted them earlier this year, and they seemed to 'take', but now looking a bit sorry for themselves, and the buds have died. i have wondered also, is mine are in too shady a spot, as it is dappled sunlight where i have sited them?

Peonies are notorious for this problem - mine refused to open its buds one year and I hosed the soil away from the crown to make sure it wasn't too deep - one common cause -this worked with mine as I had good results the following year.
Other causes can be - too much shade, too dry, not enough nutrients. Take your pick!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Mine too. I think mine is a massive combination as just moved into rubbish fast draining area, no water and lots of shade. I'm on the move again soon so will re-plant again and hope for a better crop next year.
