Hi Gunners - pretty slack day for me today. Weather very wet and cold so just nipped down to the lottie and brought a couple of bits home from the shed I dont need. Started to draw my stencil for my name plate for the shed - Dexter's Den (thanks to shirthegirl - see the other thread), once Ive done that will paint it and put it up, then photo time.
Hope everyone else has had a more productive day! DDL

Chucked it down with rain all day but thought I had better try and progress work at lottie cos it could be covered in snow tomorrow!

Dug one row and wondered why it was hard to seperate the weed roots until I realised the roots were frozen into the soil!

OK methinks, "how else can I progress work?" "I know, I'll shift a bit of manure onto the plot" Two wheelbarrows both with flat tyres..bugger it!
Filled a couple of barrow loads and managed to drag it onto the plot.

By this time it was starting to get dark and the wet was starting to get through my overcoat "Thats it, I've had enough" says I and toddled off to Tesco's for a nice bottle of red wine!

Got home just in time to listen to the end of the game on the radio. What an end to the day ....2-1 to the Toon...against Liverpool!!!! Howay the lads!!

Rained all day here in Suffolk - more rain forecast, as far as they eye can see...all my 5 waterbutts are overflowing, what a waste. I've bought and read all the gardening mags; sorted thru my seeds; sorted thru my seeds again. I WANT TO START SOWING!

                You have my sympathies,
We too have much bindweed on our new plot. Hand dug it out last year and now just watching to see how much pops back up this year. Im ready with the spade to dig out any that dare show its little head!

                  Bloody weather.

Been attempting to level a patch of ground for my greenhouse base, but have been snowed on, and then following a thaw flooded out.

And now the ground is too sticky to do anything with. Need about 5 days of dry weather before I can get back on the soil. And that is when it arrives from the manufacturers

You have my sympathy there Seasprout. When my usband put our greenhouse up - about 20 years ago - he was wearing a jumper and a jacket, and he was so cold he could hardly hold the bolts - AND THAT WAS IN MAY !!!! Hope the weather fairs up for you and May is much better this year.

We have just taken on a third plot that happens to be next door to our first, its a bit neglected and has its share of rubbish on it. However, I turned up to empty the compost trugs into the compost bins and plant some aromel strawberry plants and found there was a skip on site.

Well several trips with the big barrow later and the plot is minus 2 beer chillers from a pub (why?), a microwave, an old rotary lawn mower, lots of lino tiles, ceramic tiles, plastic tat and glass. As an added extra I piled up all of the crap wood and old pallets in the middle of the brambles ready for a burn up on bonfire day next month. It was very productive and satisfying.

Tommorow I will dismantle the old shed and put in on the bonfire heap and strim all of the grass down so that I can clear any residual rubbish whilst the skip is still there.

As its going to be planted with top fruit the whole lot will be ploughed and rotovated, weeds and all, the fruit trees positioned and planted after that with a metre wide planting area kept clean, the rest will be membraned and covered in bark chippings.

Hi Vicky - little tip from one who has tried both ways. A fork is much better for getting bindweed roots out. If you use a spade you chop the roots up, and any little piece left in the ground will grow into a new plant. Having said that, it does get easier as you keep cultivating.
