Aldi have an offer on from the 25th March which includes these varieties in 9cm pots (6 for £2.99), can anyone tell me which would be the best to buy please?

    Ta.

Looking at the catalogues I have, Mae is a very early cropper, and Florence is late season. Sorry, no information about the others.

If you want a long fruiting season buy both Mae and Florence. When one variety has finished fruiting the other should be starting.

Hugh F-W dis a taste test on the strawberries he had grown at River Cottage, and Florence came out favourite.

It may be helpful if you can get information on the other varieties to see when they crop. Looking at the Ken Muir website might be a good stargint point.

    Now, where's our nearest Aldi.

We have 3 Aldi stores within a 3 mile radius so they never seem to run out of much.

I usually go to the new one at Trentham, it's an excuse to carry on the extra mile and go to Trentham Gardens.

We only live 3 miles away from there so I should go more often really but never do.

I bought a mixture of bare root strawberry plants in Lidl about ten days ago. I have potted them all up, Honeyo. Elsanta, Maxima and cant remember the other one right now. The Maxima already has buds on so I am assuming its an early one.

                  Christine.
                  Early.
Vigorous and productive. Lots of runners.
Good overall disease resistance, but slightly prone to moulds on the fruit in wet weather.

                  Symphony.
                  Mid-late.
Vigorous and productive. Lots of runners.
                  Excellent disease resistance.

                  Hapil.
                  Mid-late.
                  Good fruit.
Not very vigorous and not very productive. Not many runners.

                  Florence.
                  Late.
Abnormally weak growing. Very low yield. No runners, but crowns tend to divide into two at the end of the season.

Having grown all four above, I will be binning Florence and Hapil next year, to concentrate on Christine (early) and Pegasus (late), with a small number of Alice (early) and Symphony (late) as backup.
                  .

Lidl have some other varieties in for the same price, or two for £7...

                    Was almost tempted earlier!

Some of those were in flower... are they hardy? Still frosting here - and I may take a trip to my local garden centre this weekend to get some honeyo (really liked them last year) - they grew amazingly well in hanging baskets, but needed watering a lot.

Ah, found the Lidl ones on their site - Ostera or Elsanta never heard of Ostera before, but B&Q also have in Elsanta.

well- if you have a change of heart cos they have run out of your first choices- I have grown Mae- and yes, they were early- I just put a fleece over them once they were in flower and removed it during the day. In fact we were eating them by early May! ( well before the last frost!)
                              Nice flavour too.
