  • Freezing apples?

If i peel apples can i freeze them sliced up without them turning brown? ,

do i need to do something like washing them with citric acid first? to stop the browning?

    Can i freeze whole apples????

( got lots of apples, no time to cook them before freezing )

Peel the apples and slice into a bowl of water with a good squirt of lemon juice added. Then drain and freeze - that should do the trick. However the browning really doesn't matter - when you bake them in an apple pie they go brown anyway.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

I always cook mine with a bit of lemon before freezing.

So long as you do not intend to keep them long, you can just freeze them, but do not expect them to taster the same.

Thanks, lemon juice it is, itl have to stay raw though as ive no time to cook them

Im going to have to slice them and dip in water / lemon juice , i have 6 black dustbins full of them.... so its going to take some slicing!
Ive no idea on varietys, but they taste ok, a black dustbin of them look like cox they seem to be storing ok, but the rest are wonky golden delicious shape /colour ones, they dont look like they will store at all even spread out on shelves they are ripening very quickly and a few have rotted

i was planing on bags of stewed apple and apple pies and crumbles but i havent got time so i thought if i freeze them i can just make apple pies with frozen apple or stew it when its needed

If you get the boxes that apples come in from the supermarket, along with the dividers, then sound apples will store for months in a cool(not cold) place.

If you have a juicer you can juice them and freeze the juice in plastic bottles

We just peel, slice and freeze, no dipping. They don't go brown but it wouldn't matter for cooking anyway.

I just peel mine and slice and keep them in water until i have done enough to fill a bag

The browning is merely bacteria growing

browning on freshly cut apples is NOT bacterial, it is oxidation of some substance found in apples, pears and bananas (maybe some other fruit too). 'Coating' the cut surfaces with lemon juice does prevent it, but if they are going to be in the freezer within a few mins of cutting, maybe it doesn't have time to happen?

The brown colour is rust, very similar to what you find on metal.
