  • Anyone got a Rumtopf?

I have fancied one of these for a while so I can pop the rasps and strawbs in as they ripen.

Our local charity shop has one in the window today, but before I go and buy it I thought I would see if any grapes have one and whether it is recommended.

I've just bought one second hand and have already put in some strawberries and raspberries. No idea if the output from it is worthwhile but it's got to be worth a try and I thought it was rather fun. They look pretty cool in the kitchen too.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I was given one for a wedding present from a German friend and made one every year until recently. You need to put in fruit add half the weight in sugar and cover with rum, putting a plate or saucer on top to keep the fruit in the alcohol, and then (the hard part) leave until winter - traditionally Christmas. Rumtopf with icecream is a magic dessert.
It's best to use golden rum which enhances the flavours of the fruit.
Most fruit can be used, plums are particularly good but don't bother with blackberries (can be bitter) bananas (go mushy) and watermelon -the water content is too high.

I use the largest size Kilner jar I could lay my hands on and it works just as well.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

According to the River Cottage Preserve book they don't advise currants, gooseberries or rhubarb but other fruits are good. I'm doing mine with brandy as I'm not keen on rum.

BTW, paid a fiver for mine which I thought was pretty good as it's in perfect nick but had a lot of trouble getting a saucer to fit in the neck but still keep the fruit down and have resorted to weighing down a wedge of greaseproof paper.

You also need to seal the jar with clingfilm as the lid isn't air tight - wouldn't be a problem with a kilner jar but they don't look as good!

variations on this theme... http://fantes.com/images/22911fruit.jpg the one they had in the shop was white and would have been ideal.

I have now put a wanted post on our local freecycle so waiting to see if I can get one that way

I use a glass sweet jar. You can rotate the jar every week to mix he sugar and liquid. I don't think you can do that with a Rumtopf?

I remember Rumtopf's as a fad in the early 70's along with those orange hoppers and clackers.

The instructions I have tell me not to mix the contents until a month or so after you've filled it and leave it all in layers. No idea why but am following the instructions (for once!).

By the way, what the dickens are "those orange hoppers and clackers"?

Space hoppers are the orange bouncy things http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_hopper . Clackers were two balls (about pingpong ball size but heavier) on a string - you 'bounced' them together more fiercely until they smacked together above and below (and around) your fist. I still remember the bruises Clackers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

They tried to ban clackers because everyone got hurt who used them.

Used to love space hoppers but never called them anything but space hoppers! Remember clackers now but think we called them something else. Ah, childhood memories and probably things not to be combined with the contents of my rumtopf!
