  • theres hundreds!

Just been on my local coincil site out of curiosity to see if the uptake on allotments has increased and guess what there must be at the very least 300 vacant plots in various locations around grimsby and no waiting lists,It seems such a crying shame that hundreds of people are on waiting lists and can expect to wait a minimum of a year and here in my town they cant give them away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That can't be right, can it?
You're taking 200 of them, then?

Bit far for me to carry a watering can, I'm afraid!

ones enough for me at the moment, it just seems a crying shame i wish the council would promote allotments more, theyve already sold a lot off and half our site is being turned into a wetlands area due to flooding (and that i can understand) I think it would give the "bad lads" in our area a purpose if we could just get the youngers ones interested in gardening

Grimsby is a fishing area......strange that there are not plots full of Patotes and onions. with the odd bed of gerkins.

I've noticed this even in one city, some areas have 100 plus on the waiting list and others haves dozens of vacant plots. I don't understand it. I even more don't understand why occasionally these sites can be less than half a mile apart, but no-one from the list is prepared to take a plot at the half empty site.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

I've just got an allotment in the Carr Lane Allotments, and I'm not kidding - half the site is a massive field. I think they're actually selling part of it off to the local school. When I went to see the site I thought it was just a massive dogwalking area. It's an absolute shame when there are thousands of peole waiting. I agree - give young offenders a plot and tell them they have to raise vegetables for local hospitals/good causes

Why should all the young offenders have all the fun? A lot of 'old' offenders would die for an allotment plot!

Regretably I don't have time to take one on, plus my local ones are all full (geography perhaps).

Maybe we should ask Hugh FW to come along and get the people of Grimsby Growing Their Own?

Good luck with your plots folks.

price might have something to do with it..

The basic rate for a standard plot (300 square yards/250 square metres) for the calendar year 2010 is £76.46.

down the road where I live (Scunthorpe) maybe the 3 figure waiting lists are because of the price

The average allotment is a plot of land comprising of 300sq yards (or 253sq m). Each plot is rented at £22 per annum

Less than a third of the price

Christ, in Wolverhampton we can't get anything bigger than a postage stamp to plant on !
I am trying to sort out some private allotments but the council won't lease the land and the other plot is owned privately and they have pulled out !
                        Getting a bit frustrated now.
I have already converted my back garden as you can see on my web site and also used the front lawn so haven't got any space left now !

I read somewhere that if you get 6 people on the electoral roll in the area to write to the council, they legally have to provide the space for an allotment. Could be worth seeing f there's anyoneelse in your area that wants to try this?

I know, I was a bit shocked when they told me how much they were. Ones I was looking at in Messingham when I lived there were £6 a year! According to the guy who runs the site, the prices have gone up 400% over the last few years. They've sold part of the Carr Lane site off to the school in the area with promises to put the money back into the allotments. A rent reduction would be super!

I know, thats the shame. But if they're going spare ayway, there's nothing stopping them using them as part of their community service is there? At least get them clearing the brambles and weeds awa from the most neglected plots.
