  • why Sweet Peas?

    Hiya

I have a question from hubby.

Why do people grow Sweet Pea?

Is there reason or is it just a flower everyone grows.

    Cheers

They've very pretty and smell nice - is that good enough, oh yes and they're easy too.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Sweet peas look lovely and smell lovely aswell. They make really good cut flowers for the house and a mixed packet of seeds gives a great colourful display. I grow them up the outside of the greenhouse and they always look lovely.

Do they not attract good guy insects aswell or is that just what the garden centre told me to sell me a couple of packets of seeds.

They're one of my favourite - for the smell as much as their delicate look. I had a vase of sweetpeas in the house all through the summer (not the same ones, obviously! ) I guess they're the quintessential English cottage garden flower - way up there with roses. They can add more colour to a bean growing area and are great for wall/fence covering. And of course they come in a wide range of colours too!

Not sure about the insects Bex; mine had a few ladybirds on this summer as a result of all the aphids. I made a daily trip to flick the aphids off the plants, and there were still plenty left for the ladybirds.

Everyone else has said it. They're lovely, they smell wonderful - I like a garden to smell like a garden - and they give you cut flowers for the house all summer long. I think that's three good reasons.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

I agree, I think they're wonderful flowers. Kings catalogue has a really good selection of sweet peas.

excellent Thank you for answering my husband question.

I think we will be having some sweet peas on our allotment and garden at home.

Yes, I've bought some from them - to fuel my addiction! I've just come back from the garden centre with another 5 packs of spring bulbs. Spose there are more expensive (and harmful) habits!

Another way to look at it Nic is: people are just planting the seeds of there's for next year whereas I have 8'-0" seedlings already!
