Question about Leeks

    Question about Leeks

    A very kind grape sent me some leeks but I'm not sure what I should do with them. They are all still in a clump and still look like grass. I've been putting them outside for the last few days, and here in Kent I would be amazed now if we got any frost. I have a small raised bed to put them in (1m x 0.5m). At what point can I plant them in the bed? do they need to get bigger or can I plant them out when they have had a few more days outside hardening off? If they do need to get bigger, do I thin them out?

    Can someone please advise me on spacing so that I can work out how many I can get in the bed?

    If you have space then you can put them out now, they are frost hardy anyway. The advised method is to dig a 6-8" hole about 3" wide, so use a trowel, and then just simply drop the individual leeks in the hole. Don't backfill but just fill the hole with water and then leave them until next late winter/spring to eat.

      If you haven't got space right now - plant them out together in a corner somewhere, then do what Capsid says as you have space for them when they go into their final positions.

      I've got loads that will be shoved in corners somewhere [they resemble chives for a significant part of the year], and will be pulled out and planted in final spaces when the harvests are all coming in during sept/oct.

        I hadn't realised they take so long to grow and leaving them is an option for now. That's excellent I'll be able to use the bed for something else, in fact I may have more spare beds for them!
