  • crispy runner bean leaves

i've got some runner beans growing in pots.. they're about 2 inches tall now (some of them anyway) but the leaves are all crispy and brownish coloured.. also the beans are exposed.. should i cover them back up with soil? and what do i do about the crispy leaves?

will they be ok? and shall i cover the bean up with compost again? i'm not sure what's supposed to happen next, do some more leaves come out of the middle of the bean?

        How is the bean uncovered?
Do you mean it has sprouted and it looks like the seed has split?

        If so, this is normal.

yeah thats exactly what it's like.. will the leaves recover from the scorch? the plants were outside in the blowaway greenhouse but i've brought them back in now cos i was worried about them

you need to water the roots, not the leaves. Then they won't scorch.

oops, i thought that seeing as they were all brown and crispy i'd better spray some water on the leaves to uncrisp them.. looks like i've made things worse

              oh well, a lesson learned

But thank you for posting cfke, I will know to try to avoid this scenario now when I plant mine out. I had assumed that they were fairly tough, but possibly not.

I don't think you can make it worse by spraying water, it's only water ...If they really are crispy and crunchy after you've watered them again, and not growing [runner beans grow like crazy, are very thirsty plants], then you'll probably have to sow more, but don't worry, they germinate rapidly as you've probably found out, but they do need a lot of room in a pot/water/support.

i sowed some more today, the brown and crispy ones are beyond saving i think
i've got another worry now!!! the leaves on my pepper seedlings have got dark patches on them, they're inside in a propagator and are about an inch and half tall, is this normal?

I normally only put seeds in a propagator until the seed leaves start appearing then leave outside

do i need to prick them out and put them in pots then? and then put them in the blowaway greenhouse? are they still ok with the dark patches on the leaves?

                          yup.
keep them indoors for a bit on a windowsill, till the weather gets a bit warmer if you have a blowaway greenhouse
As long as the dark patches aren't them rotting or anything, they should be ok.
Next time you use your propagator, take them out once you see leaves.

Yes, and handle them gently, preferably by the leaves.
