  • can peat pots be planted?

can you plant peat pots directly into buckets? i've grown some seedlings in peat pots then put them in a bucket of compost (in the peat pot)
am i doing it right or have i got the wrong end of the stick?

You have it right. So long as the compost/soil is damp, then the roots can go through the peat pot.

Absolutely. The seedling roots will penetrate the pot and spread into the compost/soil they are planted into. Don't allow the pots to become dry though, as this will impede root development through the pot. Eventually the pot will 'melt' into the soil. while the plant continues to grow.
A good beginning is half the work.
Praise the young and they will make progress.

I've today transplanted some pearl tomatoes that are in little peat pots. The roots were already growing out of the pot. I've kept them moist, so hoping they will continue to thrive. According to the other replies, I've done something right for a change! Happy Gardening!

I cut slits in the pots to let the roots thru Otherwise they tend to get root bound.

I have seen this on Youtube before, and I always wondered if cutting slits damaged the roots. Would it be the same if one tries to tear the bottom of the pot when the pot is wet and them plant.
