  • Obtaining bark / wood chip

Last weekend I put down a load of weed supressing material around my soft fruit bushes. I want to put some wood chip or bark on top of this if possible and am currently trying to source some as cheaply as possible. Anybody know where's best to get some?

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Contact your local council - sometimes the parks department gives it away for free (though it's usually a huge amount).

We contacted some local groundsmen - who were strimming and shredding near our plots.
Now they deliver to us every week in summer, for free.

If you have no luck with the council try local tree surgeons. They often have to pay to get rid of chippings so are only too happy to offload the stuff for free.

Try some of the conservation charities too. Usually they have a use for it on one or the other of their projects, but occasionally they have far too much or nowhere that currently needs it.

If you are getting wood chips from a tree surgeon (or anywhere really) just make sure you are (not) taking diseased wood as you could be transfering the disease to your plot/garden.
