  • Ẁhat plants can support beans and peas?

I know that corn is robust enough to take a few bean stalks wrapped around it, but is anything else appropriate to use as support? I have some small red orach seedlings and read that they can grow to 3-5 feet in height, but I don't know if they are too leafy or too flimsy to use. Does anyone know or have other ideas?

Grow them up against fences or in pots around trees. I have a walk in chicken run that is ideal as a growing frame. Train them around door frames and windows.

I grew red orach last year. It's definitely not as thick and sturdy as corn, you could give it a go but I suspect it might not be able to hold the weight.

Interesting idea though - I might try planting some climbing beans with my amaranth this year and see if that works (if the beans outclimb the amaranth I can just put a few canes in).

I would think Jerusalem artichokes could cope. It's a matter of both plants being at the right stage of growth though, isn't it?

Thanks for some ideas everyone. I don't know if I'll do it, but I have a few big planters that I thought might be more interesting with plants as supports rather than canes. Hmm, I would guess that sunflowers might work as well?

The trouble I can see in a container is that the support is going to compete for food and water with the climbing crop. Why not try some on canes and some on plant supports, and see which works best?

              I might just do that!

I've read elsewhere that sunflowers work well as support for climbing beans. What about artichokes? Though I don't know if they grow fast enough to keep up with the bean plant.
