  • Apple pruning woes

    Hello all

Im a bit of a newbie with the growing and cultivating experience and I really need all the help I can get. I have a James Grieve apple tree about two or three years old which produced a number of good sized apples this season. The problem is that all the leaves and fruit are on the tips of the branches so when the fruit grows the branches are too thin to support the weight. I have read that pruning helps to strenghthen branches but how much should I remove? Im afraid that if I cut the branches to a third of their length they wont fruit. New buds have formed since harvesting but only on the tips not on the branches lower down. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to prune this type of tree? Also when is the best time? Before the first frost or once the tree has lost all its leaves and is dormant?

Hi Evanseven18 - welcome to the Vine. Don't know anything about apples but I'm sure someone will give you good advice on here.

If you cut them back by half you'll force the lower buds to swell as the lead shoots are taking all the sap at the moment. You may loose a bit of fruit but at least you won't have a weak tree.

      Welcome to the Vine bTW.
