  • Advice needed today if possible please :)

    Hello all,

Back from the lottie and have managed to dig over a patch roughly 16' by 16' lots of bramble roots amongst other things, managed to do it with 2 of us digging for over 4 hours. Now I am desperate to get my onion sets planted and I have 2 options as I can see.

    Do I:

cover with black plastic and plant the sets through this (covering the whole area), or
create paths with the plastic and cover them and plant the onions this way so splitting up into beds?

Want to go back tomorrow (weather depending), what do you think? Would covering the whole area and planting through rot down any remaining bits of bramble roots?

    Many thanks

    Sue

Well...if you were me and I was you.....

    I'd make beds- 4ft wide.
(I know you'd have very little weeding if you planted the onions through the plastic.)
Never thought of planting onions through plastic but when I planted my strawberries through plastic I got puddles of water forming and I'd imagine that would encourage rotting of nearby onions ...maybe????

well done in clearing the area though!

Bramble roots won't rot easily and will probably try to break through the polythene. Anyway, no need to plant your sets yet you have until the end of March, that's when I'm planting mine.

Why not keep a watching brief on the plot and pull up any brambles you see, you should be dong this anyway as you will need to eventually want to rid the plot of bramble I presume.

I've had blackberry force it's way through a pond liner, so I don't hold out much hope for a bit of black plastic
