Finally got out into the garden this weekend. Is it too late to dig in some (maybe horsey) organic compost? We will be growing runner beans, french beans, corgettes and onions.
Any advice appreciated.

Some veg don't like freshly manured ground even when it is well rotted.

I think I remember reading somewhere that onions don't like freshly manured ground (like roots) but I'm sure someone will correct me if that's wrong :-)Growing in the Garden of England

I think onions are ok, it's carrots and parsnips that will fork in fresh manure.Comment

Don't know from my own experience,but I've been warned away from using horse manure unless it's been sat for at least 2 years...something to do with the fact that they eat & don't digest stinging nettle seeds...therefore you run the risk of digging in lots of the seeds.
As for any other compost,it will be fine.I don't actually apply my compost to certain beds until I do the planting.Squash for example,I dig a hole,mix in some compost & plant the plant straight away.
Like others have said though,check that what you're growing actually needs it or not,sometimes it does more harm than good!the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.

Thanks everyone, think I may give the horsey stuff a miss though and dig in other compost prior to planting. Very excited - I have just worked out we have room for a small greenhouse if I can get the 6x4 rabbit shed (now deceased :-( ) moved to the end of the garden for tool storage.....Comment
